As I reflect on my work-related goals for 2024, one goal stands out above the rest—it was to have a minimum of 15 coaching hours each month. Acheiving this goal puts me on track to fulfill the requirements needed to take the International Coaching Federation’s certification exam in late February and obtain the Professional Certified Coach designation.
Initially, I questioned the significance of this goal, wondering if it lacked ambition. 15 hours on the surface doesn't seem like much. Yet, upon achieving it, I came to realize its profound impact. This goal not only pushed me beyond my comfort zones but also embodied two core values of mine: the desire to empower others and grow as a professional life coach.
Pursuing goals that propel us beyond our comfort zones can be daunting. Venturing outside that familiar space isn't easy; it challenges us to choose between embracing our values or shying away from discomfort. In the book "Imposter No More," Dr. Jill Stoddard aptly describes values as what we strive to embody in our lives—a representation of what truly matters to us as we navigate our journey. When individuals express their longing for a meaningful life, I believe what they're really saying is that they seek to honor their values.
Honoring our values gives us the strength to confront the discomfort associated with stepping outside our comfort zones. Instead of evading discomfort, we move toward our values. For instance, if you prioritize helping others achieve physical wellness, you won't let fear of public speaking hinder you from presenting ways to incorporate exercise into daily life in front of a large audience.
Pursuing our values doesn't make tasks effortless; instead, it makes them purposeful. We realize our desire to honor our values outweighs our yearning for personal comfort. When viewed through this lens, our values possess the power to lead us toward a life abundant with experiences and relationships.
Do you know your values? Those three or four traits serving as the North Star of your life's ambitions? The internet offers numerous value word lists that can help you take this introspective journey. If you'd like to delve deeper into identifying your values, know that I'm here to support your efforts and welcome having that conversation. Knowing your values and living by them in 2025 is your superpower to achieving goals worthy of your life.
I believe in you.
